A somewhat unusual tile in some ways a typical 19thC nature study design that one would expect to see in hand painted watercolour or mass-produced as a print but this as majolica. Competant moulding, decorating too although limited to the technology of the times, 'teapot' brown a staple colour of the times and indeed of the natural world, mottled glazes to represent the variabilities of nature, white flowers and green leaves. Interesting moulding too, reasonably high relief and indented, giving the impression of four layers, the designer/manufacturer making full use of the technology then available. There are more 'instant attraction' tiles but this has depth, meaning and insights.

This design as a print & tint tile would be quite typical, as a majolica tile it is pretty unusual, as is in essence a print design but executed in majolica. This suggests that the tile was designed and made when print & tint styles with the intricate detail afforded by the slender printed outline was predominent and when the new technology of lead glazed majolica tiles was coming to the fore.

Unattributed versos all very clean and that I have not seen before. I would guess Marsden first and indeed he was noted for experimentation with techniques and styles so that accords with the decoration too. I am more confident of the date for the design and materials and techniques narrow it to just a few years.

A little chipping/roughness to the top edge, slight dulling to the glaze where the brown is darkest this a manufacturing flaw/environmental effect.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format and on screen is about the size as it would be in real life at the same distance. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
