Near perfect really, just one tiny surface chip which is very well hidden in plain sight at the heart of the flower bottom left. Some minor manufacturing flaws but perfectly clean and brilliantly glazed.

• Style/technique: Aesthetic print & tint
• Manufacturer: John Meir & Son?
• Dimensions: 6" x 6"
• Date: circa 1890

An excellent tile, a lovely light and pretty design of honeysuckle climbing a trellis, dark brown print and four colours beautifully painted.

From an unknown manufacturer or decorator, this looks like Marsden's biscuit. Printed mark and pattern number the mark consisting of M, S and J overlapping an ampersand the only possibility that I am aware of being John Meir & Son a pottery company that produced good quality wares and reportedly was active from 1837 - 1897. Tiles with the mark are found from time to time, very nice quality especially of decoration and in styles typical of 1885 - 1895. This tile has more decorating flaws than I would expect from this company, still all minor and not too detracting.

Verso very clean, printed pattern number and initials.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format, a larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
