Minor rim and surface marks. Style: Arts
& crafts movement An embossed tile with a repeating floral
design in the all over arts & crafts
movement style, a durable buff clay tile glazed
with a rich mahogany glaze. Mahogany glaze was
popular for fireplace tiles due to it refelcting
the red/orange/yellow glow of the burning fire
better than any other colour. Leonard Atkinson Shuffrey had offices at 38
Welbeck St, Cavendish Sq, London, an architect
working in the era of the arts & crafts
movement he worked with designs by many of the
famous names. Austwick comments that L A
Shuffrey designed lustre tiles for Edwards 'in
imitation of William de Morgan's work'. Just two
tile designs were registered by Shuffrey this
was likely made by Maw who made many tiles for
Edwards. He authored a book entitled The English
Fireplace, published in 1912. Verso perfectly clean, embossed Shuffrey
