About ten very tiny rim chips, near perfect
surface and brilliantly glazed. Style/technique: Floral block
print This is a great tile, a full design in the
aesthtic/arts & crafts movement taste.
Within a border of natural geometric form the
design fills the body with lightly stylised
naturalistic floral forms printed in six
colours A design rarely found which would be quite
surprising given the taste of the times and its
brilliant colours but I believe that this was a
very expensive tile. A block printed tile, quite
phenomenal colours for the time and technique,
other companies were able to hand paint similar
colours in a similar time frame but colour
printing was very colour restricted. The pattern
number, not shown on the tile but it is
illustrated in the catalogue, indicates an
introduction date of 1889. Verso very clean, Mintons etc embossed.
England or 'Made in England' not embossed and
Mintons Ltd were one of the first companies to
use the mark to comply with USA import
regulations introduced in late 1890 so it is
taken that this was made in the 1889/1890 time
frame. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430
pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format, a
larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG
format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
