Tiny chips/wear to the rim, surface is near
perfect, perfectly clean, brilliant glaze. Style: Classical pictorial One of this excellent series designed by John
Moyr Smith for Mintons, a series which is not as
often found as I would expect given the
universal appeal of fairy tales. First
introduced in 1874 they remain in Minton's
catalogue certainly well in to the 1890s, most
would have been produced earlier in the date
range as over time the popularity of printed
tiles especially in single colour faded. Blue and white is of course most appropriate
for this tile entitled Blue Beard and apparently
blue and white for this series would seem to be
rather rare. In Annamarie Stapleton's book about
Moyr Smith by and it is shown only in brown and
black prints. Other colourways are also rarely
found. Verso very clean, removed from furniture,
embossed Mintons etc.
