Chequer tiles are amongst the least sought after of decorated tiles though in their day they were no lower priced and indeed greatly appreciated as we can see from the number of chequer designs that were registered. This is an excellent example and one of few that I have had in my collection for many years. The soft green ground is superb, the colours of the flowers are great and the glazes have very high brilliance.

It is also an excellently well made tile, Corn competed with Boote in the 'affordable' market and often this shows, not so in this case. The biscuit is square and well pressed, the glazes are well painted and true to the outlines, just two minute specks of clay underglaze and slight fading of the colour towards the bottom left corner are all there is to find fault.

Verso perfectly clean, C embossed in opposing corners.

* There were at least three companies with Corn in the name and two Corn Bros. E. R. Corn who started the tile business in 1891 said of the transfer of the busness to the new Pinnox Works in 1903, "at the same time, the existence of two other concerns bearing the family name -"Corn Bros." and "Corn Bros. & Co." - having led to confusion, the name of W. & E. Corn was allowed to lapse and the firm became "The Henry Richards Tile Company Limited".
