Art Nouveau Majolica
- Style/technique: Art Nouveau Majolica
- Manufacturer: Rhodes
- Dimensions: 6" x 6"
- Date: Circa 1908
- Colours: 5
A later art nouveau design showing some classical
influence. A nice example of the convergence of the
styles for it is difficult to identify specific classical
elements yet the feel is there. Ribbons of course
typically classical but even therein the folds and flow
can well indicate style, classical ribbons, rococo
ribbons, art nouveau ribbons can all be identified.
Fairly complex to manufacture and pretty good quality
for Rhodes. Five colours all quite true to the lines,
lovely translucent background green, deeper green for the
foliage and ribbons, blue flower with yellow centre and
buds and the white background is a definite positive too.
Nothing outrageous about the design or colours in fact
quite easy going and versatile, so much so that it is
surpring that it is not frequently seen.
Price: £60 (approx $90)
One minute chip top left, a few minute chips to the
raised line, one scratch bottom right and very minor surface
marks only visible when the tile is tilted to the light. A
very clean tile with high brilliance in the glazes.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in
maximum quality JPEG format.
The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close
to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any
chips etc can be quickly spotted. Surface marks described
are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed
straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections
in reflected light. For more details of how we describe
marks see Condition.
