A stylised botanical tile in the aesthetic taste, not only stencilled but also hand painted veins on leaves and dots on the flowers.

Patent Impressed tiles are the best known special process tiles made by Wedgwood. Wet clay (slip) was applied to the tile through a stencil resulting in a sharp, distinct line to relief tile decoration which was usually blurred by glaze bleeding on moulded majolica tiles. George Marsden, the inventor of the process was a former employee of Wedgwoods who licensed the process from his company and the tiles were acclaimed for their crispness of decoration. Wedgwoods took the unusual step of commissioning designs from leading artists like Lewis F Day for their patent impressed tiles. This example could well be by Lewis Day and is quite unusual having six colours.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
